About Counselling

Counselling is a professional service which assists people in dealing with issues that are troubling them. It is a confidential and non-judgmental process inviting you to explore the underlying causes of your difficulties and to find ways to overcome the obstacles which hinder you in achieving your goals. Depending on the complexity of the presenting issues counselling can be a shorter or a longer-term process. The relationship you form with your counsellor is crucial for the success of therapy, therefore it is often helpful to think about what kind of person you are looking for when searching for a therapist.
What can you expect from the first session?
It is normal to feel a bit anxious before your first counselling session. You are meeting with a person you have never met before and are about to discuss very personal matters. Usually initial anxiety will subside quickly when you get to know your counsellor and feel comfortable and safe to discuss your concerns.
During the first session you will have to fill out a few forms in which you will be explained the terms and conditions of counselling including confidentiality and its limits. We also will discuss your expectations and desired outcomes. Thereafter, we will talk about a plan on how you to best achieve these outcomes. I will review with you every few sessions if you feel you are on the right track and if you are benefitting from the process. You will be encouraged to discuss any questions that may arise.
